Sony Bronze for Real Yorkshire's News Team
The team at Real Radio is celebrating today after winning a prestigious Bronze Sony Radio Academy Award for its evening news programme.
The Real ‘News at Five’ team was presented with the News and Current Affairs Programme Bronze Award at the 25th annual Sony Radio Academy Awards, which recognise excellence within the UK radio market.
The Sony’s, dubbed the Oscars of the radio world, took place last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
The GMG Radio owned station, faced tough competition in the category, which included two hugely popular national shows, Radio 4’s The Today Programme and Five Live’s Breakfast.
The eight-strong Real Radio news team prides itself on bringing real stories, real people and real life to listeners across Yorkshire. Bulletins are broadcast 24/7 and always have a strong Yorkshire focus, making local news accessible to the community any time of the day or night.
Steve South, Real Radio’s Managing Director, said: "Everyone at Real Radio is absolutely thrilled with this fantastic award. A Sony Award is the ultimate industry recognition for a team who are doing a brilliant job day in and day out, bringing the most relevant and interesting local news to people across Yorkshire.”
The Sony Radio Award Judges commented: "This was radio with a real sense of place and community. It was also campaigning radio, not afraid to take on difficult subjects like bullying. It was accessible, relevant and well produced and we’re not surprised to learn that listening figures actually go up when it’s on air - a rare thing for a news programme!"
